</tbody></table>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">I have not been blogging for quite some time now and LinkedIn seems to be the right platform to get started again after having a 3-year pause on my personal BIM blog at BIMSpot.blogspot.com. </span></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">I would like to discuss the collective mindset that we need to change in order to be able to build better and more efficiently. Nowadays, implementation and utilization of technology in construction grow hourly. However, the way we use to build, or at least the building mindset remains unchanged.</span></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Are we not very serious about the accuracy and consistency of the information that we produce in order to build? Are we reluctant to follow the exact (information) drawings and specifications, etc, when we are on site, in the field to execute the work? What happens as a result; we say something on paper, but we build something else on the ground.</span></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Now, what if the buildings that we build were meant to fly, just like the aeroplanes that carry millions of people every day? Would we still be so reluctant to change the ways we build or the ways we produce buildable, coordinated, verified information to build? Would we still care about changing that HVAC duct position not to clash with the steel structure?</span></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">And what is even more ironic, would we make sure that the resulting digital coordination is actually taken seriously by the team members who execute work in the field? Because, if we don't, and we try to fly that building tomorrow, it might leak air, leak chilled water and pose a thread to poeples lives.</span></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">In the aircraft and automotive industry, digital prototyping and production, based on digital prototyping are far ahead of those in the construction industry. Yet it seems that the technology is mature enough nowadays to accommodate digital prototyping and high precision building setting-out in construction. This is just one of the areas where major construction waste is hidden, that results in massive re-work for all the supply chain entities, as well as every individual professional involved. That in turn, creates a toxic and unhealthy environment to work, to engineer and to create. Creativity is diminished by stress...</span></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Let's change. The technology is here. Let's build the buildings of tomorrow that could even fly...</span></div>

Just a quick tip. All of us who deal with quantification in Revit must know that Revit is looking at slabs'/floors' perimeter in two ways, the external perimeter and the total perimeter including the perimeters of cut outs. See the illustrations below and compare the properties:<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

Recently one of my connections from Case suggested to get my head around Dynamo. I gotta tell you - IT IS AN UNPACKED POWER FOR BIM. And when I say BIM I don't mean conceptual models for architects controlled and manipulated using Dynamo. I agree that initially it was intended to control stuff in Conceptual massing environment, however lot of people found better use of the possibilities that it gives to automate some tasks and do batch executions of tedious tasks in Revit.<br />
Honestly, before coming across Dynamo I was constantly thinking that Autodesk should do something to enable something like that for advanced users and those who usually expect more. Those who are specialists in their field don't necessarily need to be advanced programmers to program and execute custom tasks for PUT SOME LOGIC INTO THE MODELS. Specifically, construction models.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgfChB2KLvIXeWZx0tllTwWjtabjcg3C-rJK2vpnVMfWyKs2BC_NIGvKxMgKJ9IdkmXWVrlt2veNg3NnN2XlZK9z4WHTCDdCkUOzlZAx6bWlcjM4tHrY_IXgmWfdx_Xg_8bBv6i_1Jek0M/s1600/dynamo.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgfChB2KLvIXeWZx0tllTwWjtabjcg3C-rJK2vpnVMfWyKs2BC_NIGvKxMgKJ9IdkmXWVrlt2veNg3NnN2XlZK9z4WHTCDdCkUOzlZAx6bWlcjM4tHrY_IXgmWfdx_Xg_8bBv6i_1Jek0M/s1600/dynamo.JPG" height="441" width="640" /></a></div>
The only BIG THING expected when that happens is REVIT's own PERFORMANCE BOOST. I think people in "the factory" need to forget about anything else for a moment and concentrate on tweaking the engine of Revit into something that can handle large projects relatively easy. Especially, when we have somehow, already accepted the fact that we have no version downgrade on our files. I think there is no problem from that end. IMHO, in the 21st century with this expensive machines that we buy to utilize BIM we need to be in a position where we do not click and wait for REGENERATING. I know that one might say split your model into smaller pieces but why? Why should one pay so much for the software and the hardware and other resources to implement BIM and suddenly when the project is larger than say 50000 meter square you get dozens of performance issues and REGENERATING hours. <b> </b><br />
<b> <table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjbHerEAB-zQ4Nh7emKEcDrrt5ZzIng_dvx_g3DCp2RxWTu8EPwaJh8ZLZYTS7vB7p15BzIe-U1vXH-ksLS6KJMn6Y5LEp8A2s2-9-wbn8WUoNmFxhAYzLp_UWVbEZUugLmgxpa8A_XFMM/s1600/filtre-a-air-fast-air-performance-machine-contrast-cut.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjbHerEAB-zQ4Nh7emKEcDrrt5ZzIng_dvx_g3DCp2RxWTu8EPwaJh8ZLZYTS7vB7p15BzIe-U1vXH-ksLS6KJMn6Y5LEp8A2s2-9-wbn8WUoNmFxhAYzLp_UWVbEZUugLmgxpa8A_XFMM/s1600/filtre-a-air-fast-air-performance-machine-contrast-cut.jpg" height="320" width="320" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;"><b>Give it a decent air intake to breathe with new performance :)</b></td></tr>
</tbody></table>
</b><br />
<b>Autodesk, please, if you hear me spend few millions of dollars and change the programming engine of Revit - but retain the logic - so that it can PERFORM faster and not REGENERATE 50% of the time!!! And maybe if you do that - from that point onwards we will also be able to save backwards (in the future). </b><br />
<br />
<br />
Now, back to Dynamo. Can you imagine how powerful it can be for a dynamic construction company to set up Dynamo definitions to let's say control the phases of the elements based on their location and zones. Or, even better, let's say read and MS Excel spreadsheet exported from Primavera P6 and write the activity codes to the respective elements, again based on their location and other constraints. Just think of the possibilities. And you do not necessarily need to have or be a programmer. You can pay someone to put together a definition for you and then you can re-use it on all your projects.<br />
I haven't yet had time to explore the latest release of dynamo and new
additions to it however I strongly believe that it is going to improve
over and over and become the power supply of BIM on a Revit platform. </div>

I know it is too early to know what's happening in the factory but I dare to be bit visionary and dream out loud.<br />
<br />
My wishlist for the upcoming release of Revit (2015 or whatever serial name it will get). I know it is rather a dream-list however, I want to publish what I expect to see and I think most of the long-term Revit users would agree:<br />
<br />
# 1. Performance Optimization (mainly in case of large projects)<br />
<br />
# 2. Very important: ability to assign world coordinates or X Y Z coordinates to almost all categories as parameters that can be modified to relocate an object from one position to another as well as being able to see/modify those coordinates in the element schedules. <cite class="vurls">E<b>xcitech</b> has got</cite> an add-in that accomplishes this in a limited way - it would be nice to see it as a developed feature in Revit.<br />
<br />
# 3. MEP pipes should be able to measure INVERT LEVELS from the invert levels not from the center lines necessarily, and Spot Elevation tool should be respectively tuned to measure the inner bottom of MEP pipes as invert levels. Accordingly one should be able to schedule these invert levels in pipe schedules. <br />
<br />
# 4. Scope boxes should get two major improvements: Firstly they should virtually slice the model in terms of material and schedule quantities. To enable kind of a 5D-ready model. This virtual scope slicing should be intelligent enough to automatically recognize the sequence of Location Breakdowns and include or exclude elements like foundations and columns or precast elements into the previous or the next phase/scope if it falls in the intersection of two different scopes. <br />
Scope boxes could be much useful than they are currently. First of all I think they should be sketch based just like the recent update to crop regions. We should be able to sketch a non-rectangular scope boxes. Mo rover, Scope Boxes should be applicable in 3D Views and Schedules. In other words behave somewhat like Phases. Be accessible in VG settings in linked files.<br />
<br />
# 5. Parametric Dashboard which will let us select which fields we would like to see in the Project/Model dashboard. Something like a Titleblock but with Labels that can allow to choose fields to be reported such as:<br />
<ul style="text-align: left;">
<li> File/Name</li>
<li>Sheet List</li>
<li>List of the Linked Revit Models</li>
<li>List of the Linked CAD Files</li>
<li>List of the Worksets and Owners of those worksets with the last modified or saved dates from respective users.</li>
<li>etc. </li>
</ul>
# 6. an option to convert topographical surfaces to floors with layers. to model an apron of an airport for instance.<br />
<br />
# 7. In the Structural module we would like to have a tool or option to define one of the layers of floors/foundations as a Blinding Layer with offsets instead of sketching it or adding it using slab edges. Most of the time we have blinding layers that flow from one slab to another with slopes and slanted concrete fills. <br />
<br />
# 8. In the Conceptual Mass Environment - I would like to b able to create a sweep with a profile that has got more than one closed loop. In the adaptive points - I would like to get a more stable control which will prevent my sweeps from slightly rotating especially when I elevate the point when insterted into a project.<br />
<br />
# 9. Ability to sort, re-order and group parameters in the family editor and see it in the element properties. <br />
<br />
# 10. Ability to use values of Type parameters in the formulas of Instance Parameters. <br />
<br />
# 11. Ability to attach top/bottom of walls and columns to the topo-surfaces Ability to host floors on topo-surfaces (Floor Control Points automatically adopt to topo levels and you still can control the offset).<br />
<br />
# 12. Ability to have a Sweep template or a new type of Sweep Form with variable levels for each end.<br />
<br />
This list can grow substantially so I believe people can add their wishes in the comments. </div>

Hi there, I have been keeping silence for quite some time now. I just don't like talking about what already has been discussed somewhere else. However, I prefer sharing practical solutions for the BIM challenges/possibilities that we hear in theory on our daily BIM meetings. In these series of posts I will explain in detail and step by step how to set up & manage a BIM workflow where you will have your 3D Model/Workshop Drawings linked to your 4D Sequencing & 5D Cost/Quantities. <br />

<br />
One of these type of issues is the ideal workflow from 3D BIM and workshop drawings to 4D (time & project planning) and as well 5D (model takeoff & cost planning). <br />
<br />
On one of our recent mega-projects we needed to define proper phasing (Location Breakdown Structure) and be flexible with that in terms of changes to a certain scope or all of the scopes. That is a big challenge if you are limited to a single software environment and you need to make your data affordable to the other parties of BIM like your QS or Planning departments. <br />
<br />
In this post I will mainly focus on 4D scheduling and management of phases during the construction using a simple workflow which is REVIT - PRIMAVERA - MS EXCEL-Ideate BIM Link - Navisworks. This more of an overview or the bigger picture however, it may be useful for some people and can serve as a basic idea to adopt to. In the next few posts I will get to the technical details and know-hows. <br />
You will need use Revit tools like Scope Boxes, Selection Sets & Filters, as well as Schedules. You will need to do a research on VLookUp command in Excel and learn how to use it in order to automate some tasks. <br />
<br />
The first thing you need is to communicate with the planning department of your project. If you are lucky enough to drive the process then you may achieve BIM driven programme - otherwise you will replicate the planning department's own plan and do your best to evaluate it by 4D scheduling and sequencing. If your programme is in Primavera then you'll need a CSV export of it to process in Navisworks as well as link activity ID's to Revit components. It will require you to create an advanced Excel formula to extract activity ID's from one file and to assign those to another excel sheet which represents a dynamicl link between your programme and Revit Elements. This Excel sheet is created and maintained using Ideate BIMLink add-in for Revit which gives you advantage not only to export data from Revit but also publish data back to Revit schedules. I assume you already imagine the workflow so let's structure it in the following steps. <br />
<br />
<u><b>REVIT STEPS</b></u><br />
1. Have a model in Revit (for each discipline/model you will need to created these steps, so if the project is reasonably large then you first need to have a project template). <u><b>However, if possible, while modeling, have your team to think the way they would construct.</b></u><br />
<br />
2. Create Scope Boxes to help you with defining your elements in different phases.<br />
<br />
3. Create 2 new Shared Parameters and apply these parameters to all the building component categories (if you don't already have these in your template). <br />
<div style="text-align: left;">
<i> a) Shared Parameter - Task_ID - should be an instance parameter and applied to each component or group of components as per the programme intent. </i></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh4Yn0smQQiX3lduJZLcBiM_rfkysMdLq_qvi0pwFbcuGCHwvUMvdez3hutLSjjSRh6sW0WcyRb9RB6pRc2HVhvj1By8uq5dSmfnT_XRju1zCR3VkITJkAlQdOzu2wUpFztaVf-gWhCEyw/s1600/Shared+Param_applied.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh4Yn0smQQiX3lduJZLcBiM_rfkysMdLq_qvi0pwFbcuGCHwvUMvdez3hutLSjjSRh6sW0WcyRb9RB6pRc2HVhvj1By8uq5dSmfnT_XRju1zCR3VkITJkAlQdOzu2wUpFztaVf-gWhCEyw/s1600/Shared+Param_applied.JPG" height="400" width="347" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<i> b) Shared Parameter - Zone or LBS- should be applied to an instance level of components however it is applied to define which Phase or Construction Stage do building elements belong to.</i></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiIDuXS12O8OGNYQnV3BE8-9qDTidcSV_ll4n_Pjx5OO110LnJfGAigqpLFNQww01SzZeJ90pCj75lAUn8NWTPEPwA5gvslVLRmkbkOMPBnLN4_ClmlpREeDNgKnzv3LHItCwuhNbwKNL8/s1600/applying+SP.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiIDuXS12O8OGNYQnV3BE8-9qDTidcSV_ll4n_Pjx5OO110LnJfGAigqpLFNQww01SzZeJ90pCj75lAUn8NWTPEPwA5gvslVLRmkbkOMPBnLN4_ClmlpREeDNgKnzv3LHItCwuhNbwKNL8/s1600/applying+SP.JPG" height="460" width="640" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
4. After successfully splitting building elements to Phases (applying appropriate Phase/Stage to the Zone/Stage Parameter values) you need to create schedule for each building element type/category and export them to Excel or Create excel sheet with a dynamic link using Ideate BIMLink add-in. </div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
note: Make sure you include Task_ID field in your schedules. It will be exported empty at this point but the idea is to map it with the corresponding fields of the Primavera export. </div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj4EfoDWD_YQASYWjo8WPt9O7W5uDztHZxDWeC9CXyLMRfFhKEl0hA05Vp9qHtSX52PL2mCQISSz2V8eCy93ibqn65380p-Wl7OmlX0pqQK_4CpJHIPH1ydfqU17aA4miRuxxQ4BtL1RJs/s1600/4d+FILTERS.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj4EfoDWD_YQASYWjo8WPt9O7W5uDztHZxDWeC9CXyLMRfFhKEl0hA05Vp9qHtSX52PL2mCQISSz2V8eCy93ibqn65380p-Wl7OmlX0pqQK_4CpJHIPH1ydfqU17aA4miRuxxQ4BtL1RJs/s1600/4d+FILTERS.JPG" height="316" width="640" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<u><b>MS EXCEL STEPS</b></u></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
5. Open CSV export from Primavera and make sure you know the activity ID column name. Typically it says "task_code". </div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
6. Open Revit Schedules that you have just exported to Excel (in step 4) for each Stage and in the Task_ID column create a VLOOKUP formula to retrieve corresponding elements and map their Activity IDs to the corresponding element values for each Stage/Phase e.g. Foundation Level Columns > Phase01 or Second Floor Beams>Stage 1. </div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<u><b>GO BACK TO REVIT (BIMLink)</b></u></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
7. Open Ideate BIMLink from Add-Ins tab and update the Revit Schedules to reflect changes done in Excel. If you have carefully mapped your activity ID's with VLOOKUP in Excell then all your components in Revit schedules must automatically get task_code values assigned to their Task_ID shared parameter field. </div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<u><b>NAVISWORKS SEQUENCING SETUP</b></u> </div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
8. Now we need to Export our model to Navisworks and set up some search sets that will help map these groups of elements to the gantt chart/Time Liner in Navis. </div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
9. Append the exported NWC and take some time to create Search sets using the Element search Criteria. Name the search sets that you will need to save with corresponding Task IDs.<br />
10. Import the CSV programme as a Data Source in Navis TimeLiner and Build Hierarchy of activities from it. Once it is in place, auto-attach (using rules) the search sets to corresponding tasks by name. <br />
</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
Of course, each of these steps need an in-depth topic but this kind of an overview is not a bad start at all - we will get there in the upcoming posts. </div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Most of us strongly believe that in Revit one cannot use two screens and Revit's user interface does not support two monitors. Well theoretically this is true. However, sometimes our workload forces some creativity</span>. <span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">I just learned today that if you have two equally sized screens then you most probably can afford to extend your Revit windows in some way to your two screens. </span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">The secret is - you need to Restore Down the Main Revit Application Window and after positioning it in you main screen (or whichever screen you use most of the time) click on the right edge of the window and stretch it as far as the end of your second window.</span><br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

As you finish your model and step onto the next stage of producing coordinated workshop drawings from the model you start facing challenges in coordinated annotation and document control issues which can also be tricked & parametrized to allow for more of what I call Building Information Annotation (C) .<br />
The issue I want to discuss and share with you is common in Revit documenting environment. So as we all may have noticed we have a Filled Region Tool which help as annotate/hatch with patters almost in every possible view in Revit. Except one: in sheets/titleblocks. Yes you cannot hatch or create a filled region on your titleblock. You can however do it withing the family of a titleblcock.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiR8j6ibt9cvJ_vFPqpabNY2Q4t2OjYkbOVAHiSqv6oR0ttO7AW9dx3XVc2rmyTo0uW5_Doqfply2OC2b5EQPHYPTu9tqiHgibL_S8OVdHnfmqkdZsTzN8iFatn9SN_zCqbyAx-JaLjwq0/s1600/ttleb.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="242" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiR8j6ibt9cvJ_vFPqpabNY2Q4t2OjYkbOVAHiSqv6oR0ttO7AW9dx3XVc2rmyTo0uW5_Doqfply2OC2b5EQPHYPTu9tqiHgibL_S8OVdHnfmqkdZsTzN8iFatn9SN_zCqbyAx-JaLjwq0/s640/ttleb.JPG" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
Our team came across this issue when we were trying to mark the corresponding Zones in our Key Plan which we had on a particular project titleblocks. So the first thing we did when we realized that you can't hatch a region (or Create Filled Region) we just marked a zone by manually drawing a diagonal hatch by drawing detail lines & then copying and pasting it on each and every sheet.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjC8cDnphoZbHVCQGtzpwQjcBFhPkF-TE0TTzHkhXNl5XI0UzPuhks8AhK39_mGbTUd6rBPwKa9XnGmv_dwYzZCFFZ98YkqJI8ODybKZpEDhd5HepnYYyL5s7_zl27s7d6lfPkcecma7tg/s1600/manual+hatch.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="201" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjC8cDnphoZbHVCQGtzpwQjcBFhPkF-TE0TTzHkhXNl5XI0UzPuhks8AhK39_mGbTUd6rBPwKa9XnGmv_dwYzZCFFZ98YkqJI8ODybKZpEDhd5HepnYYyL5s7_zl27s7d6lfPkcecma7tg/s400/manual+hatch.JPG" width="400" /> </a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
Then I decided that there must be a way to trick it or lets say make it work in more Revit way.<br />
<br />
So here is the solution. As long as you can create a filled region inside the family of a titleblock. Edit your titleblock family and on the key plan where you need to mark a Zone with a diagonal or crosshatch or whatever pattern you choose just create Filled Regions for each zone (Sketch a Filled Regions for each zone's boundaries). Then select each filled region you have created and click on the small rectangular button on the properties panel for Visibility parameter. Then create a new Visibilty (Yes/No) paraemeter for each hatch or Filled Region giving parameters respective zone names or numbers. Don't forget to make those as Instance marameters.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi5FhGce_VZlEWa8T04nbUH1hq1rLIOaeSrgzQti3hxb7nwMHo051eO8nCyUFhKWjd5YUEpWHGwhlP8E8SjJFuFXQQz6WZz_aFXdkRWaNnJn9zDlTmB825YVjVUD7pLjruV-FuTJJRkRe4/s1600/vis_par.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="262" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi5FhGce_VZlEWa8T04nbUH1hq1rLIOaeSrgzQti3hxb7nwMHo051eO8nCyUFhKWjd5YUEpWHGwhlP8E8SjJFuFXQQz6WZz_aFXdkRWaNnJn9zDlTmB825YVjVUD7pLjruV-FuTJJRkRe4/s640/vis_par.JPG" width="640" /></a></div>
In case if you want to see which Zone(s) are represented by a sheet in your Sheet List then you probably need to make it a Shared Instance Parameters in order to be able to schedule that property. Have good luck!<br />
<br />

When you get busy coordinating a huge BIM development process sometimes you really forget to pay attention to some handy tools Revit has got and get carried away looking for a complicated solution of a "problem" that wasn't even a problem at all. However, you didn't expect that there could be a dedicated solution.<br />
That's what has happened today in the morning when I suddenly was asked by one of our modellers on how to change the line weight of a pipe color fill legend. So here is the deal. We've modeled a potable water (supply & return) in Revit and our plot scale was somewhat 1:300 or 1:500. Whereas, we have pipes of 25mm DIA, and when we place a pipe color fill legend it creates a color background much wider than the pipes all along.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjKFkrFBprRGFzgXSciyHVsog502IjWjyXXBskIdsFeZ89UleJmisjaRc3cpWoUhpAt2DqX1Iqz4JvTVsoWz8hHo7ky6XVy919zFabO9qdu6o23fgY_hoyaN4p67WsM3ZnI42KD7MbByNE/s1600/potable+legend.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="176" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjKFkrFBprRGFzgXSciyHVsog502IjWjyXXBskIdsFeZ89UleJmisjaRc3cpWoUhpAt2DqX1Iqz4JvTVsoWz8hHo7ky6XVy919zFabO9qdu6o23fgY_hoyaN4p67WsM3ZnI42KD7MbByNE/s400/potable+legend.JPG" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
I started breaking my head around, switching line weights on and off didn't help. I tried google-ing to see if somebody came across the same thing but nothing. It seems that only I was really somewhat blind to notice or pay attention to the dedicated controls of Edit Scheme for Pipe Color Fill Legend dialog box right on the lower right corner. <br />
<br />

Let's start with one of the most required families that we need when modelling a civil or infrastructure network (external MEP). It is assumed that you (readers of this article) are already familiar with the basics of Revit family creation. <br />
<b>Manholes</b>. Manholes, basically drive the gravity networks like storm-water and sewer, and if you will spend some time to have that perfect family it can drive all the rest of the utility network and make everything more coordinated and emission-less.<br />
<br />
<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgyrSLozf5Le2BVMk_rOH67VjFyAgGpx_gOzW8XtoNj9l_7ZGKCsgGEAJc73r9u3q0jczG99-UvA2L8E8L23cTQ75Ak8XEXmkOerjSumLvEBKMvbv8FSGrtx5tr0QkIXGHGoYBk6vXz13k/s1600/Manhole+overview.JPG" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" height="356" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgyrSLozf5Le2BVMk_rOH67VjFyAgGpx_gOzW8XtoNj9l_7ZGKCsgGEAJc73r9u3q0jczG99-UvA2L8E8L23cTQ75Ak8XEXmkOerjSumLvEBKMvbv8FSGrtx5tr0QkIXGHGoYBk6vXz13k/s640/Manhole+overview.JPG" width="640" /></a></td></tr>
<tr align="left"><td class="tr-caption">Complete Manhole Family with conditional formulas already applied.</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<br />
A general rule about the manholes is that they are driven by two key <b>Variables</b>. <br />
<b>• Invert Level (IL)</b><br />
and <br />
<b>• Cover Level (CL)</b> commonly referred aslo as GL (Ground Level)<br />
And as a general rule in Civil Infrastructure models or drawings your reference level is always absolute 0.00.That gives us an idea to build our family main parameters in relations to Ref.Level which is found in all family templates. It means that if you want a properly functioning positive/negative offset parameters against your Ref. Level then go to Elevation Front and create two ref planes. First ref plane above the Ref.Level and the second one below the Ref.Level. In the following illustration you can see that I used two parameters ILpos and ILneg to control the negative and positive value acceptance for my parameters.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhd1_myJUTSEQjSidmPASinzAlJ-rk9VKNOCtu_UsMmTepwvU4SxVw1tft2_6x6NfPORBWhMZbSnJYbqj1IKN2lEbKx51EunQ5hezWDNd0Mw2wdVFi0IMr6c6exYTp8wDaOfFmO6elMtGY/s1600/positivevsnegative.JPG" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="326" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhd1_myJUTSEQjSidmPASinzAlJ-rk9VKNOCtu_UsMmTepwvU4SxVw1tft2_6x6NfPORBWhMZbSnJYbqj1IKN2lEbKx51EunQ5hezWDNd0Mw2wdVFi0IMr6c6exYTp8wDaOfFmO6elMtGY/s640/positivevsnegative.JPG" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
For each parameter that you need to accept negative/positive value, you need to create an absolute value parameter. Credits for this formula go to Robert for his wonderful <a href="http://dorevit.blogspot.ae/2008/01/offsets-for-families.html">blogpost</a> at DoRevit.blogspot.com.<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<b><span style="font-size: large;">The</span></b> other factor that might be variable and might affect our manholes is the main flow <b>Inlet</b> and <b>Outlet</b> pipe <b>dia</b>meters. When you place a connector for the pipe and assign a Radius or Dia parameter to it you can later assign some conditional formulas including your Dia parameter which will enable for example to change the chamber size as the Dia of the pipe increases or decreases.<br />

To create a properly functioning and controlled Pipe Connector (or any Revit MEP connector) you need to first create a <b><span style="color: #274e13;">reference line</span></b> (not a ref. plane). Which is controlled by parameters defining its horizontal and vertical positions as well as possible rotation angle within the family. You are going to place the connector on one of the ends or both ends of the ref line so place and constraint the ref line to a position where the endpoints of it are in the position of the connector(s) you want to create.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjQuZYQAiLmOsp67hJU_c3yrjwIbpZcbm1QBIQK12WOOzQLQnDiOHsJWkbOhQHvwaJO9UkvuYqbtx3A3_W-oJL-OLMTOg6YJKBG2fj2p5h0zFzTJ32oHbw-SqWFWjITxWc_FnLiAVvN_80/s1600/shared+parameters.JPG" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="322" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjQuZYQAiLmOsp67hJU_c3yrjwIbpZcbm1QBIQK12WOOzQLQnDiOHsJWkbOhQHvwaJO9UkvuYqbtx3A3_W-oJL-OLMTOg6YJKBG2fj2p5h0zFzTJ32oHbw-SqWFWjITxWc_FnLiAVvN_80/s400/shared+parameters.JPG" width="400" /></a></div>
<span id="goog_203379181"></span><span id="goog_203379182"></span><br />
I recommend using ref line for MEP connectors they are very useful/stable and more flexible in terms of angle rotations.<br />
<br />
And last but not least always remember that if you are developing complex content for a specific project you <b>must</b> make your key parameters (constraints or construction data) as Shared Parameters in order to be able to schedule them. That will give you an extra level of control and coordination as well as the table of content. Enjoy. If you have any questions you can write to me, I'll be more than happy to address your challenges. </div><div dir="ltr" style="text-align: left;" trbidi="on"><br /></div><div dir="ltr" style="text-align: left;" trbidi="on">Download the family template here. <a href="https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/1HOPjbu2T3V01_ZNoWxhBrNZwb1AGJjMM?usp=sharing" target="_blank">Google drive download link</a></div>

<br />
Most probably those of you who use Revit's MEP systems for modelling civil utilities came across the problem of finding the best method to create concrete encasement for duct banks running from one chamber to another. You have most probably tried the lined based family as well, which suits good if there are no slopes along the run. But when you need the encasement to follow your ducts?<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj7dnAaafZmUp1k0l4a4rCQ5vg0vjFvgcmBGdoV71NW8Vh5IpsaUm6IyzFJ5gViFPcCHSmwbEA6RhY440nNtZzM8O7V6IOPiZP5d4UKjFsOG9WM9aq_SafDJ1vwfRx6rOrRvq432E2QA2Y/s1600/overall.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="171" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj7dnAaafZmUp1k0l4a4rCQ5vg0vjFvgcmBGdoV71NW8Vh5IpsaUm6IyzFJ5gViFPcCHSmwbEA6RhY440nNtZzM8O7V6IOPiZP5d4UKjFsOG9WM9aq_SafDJ1vwfRx6rOrRvq432E2QA2Y/s640/overall.JPG" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
In my explorations to make a reliable concrete encasement family I found Revit's conceptual massing tools very useful to create an adaptive line based family. I used Metric Generic Model Adaptive as a family template.<br />
<br />
First you need to create two points along one of the ref planes like in the illustration below then connect them using spline through points option. <br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhk5qOnU36M_2-tnJ3jc7pq09RHSDutZlFNfde8dFIkyiDNPUnkh7xIgSB13oy8-5qtoVZb5AYIlXYktxhnYZN0G4-opROlGim3pO-G7U6JkVA81BA4iXYiagfu_TFE63NEEZmbcMsqHw8/s1600/make+adaptive.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><br />
</a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiq9RqwxnBFz6AdGEJBXJgN7Us7fX_uguZ5PNr-MYlSxRn0D_jY4Wx0M7EIWCB6Z_G3zaZ4AB8lckmEfDzloDExUTfFtNy2t_k3e_3LLfaLhG8-PEM-fZ6f8KfLP57fzbWYyZV8OVB0lXo/s1600/spline+through+points.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="257" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiq9RqwxnBFz6AdGEJBXJgN7Us7fX_uguZ5PNr-MYlSxRn0D_jY4Wx0M7EIWCB6Z_G3zaZ4AB8lckmEfDzloDExUTfFtNy2t_k3e_3LLfaLhG8-PEM-fZ6f8KfLP57fzbWYyZV8OVB0lXo/s400/spline+through+points.JPG" width="400" /> </a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Then select the line and tick the Is Reference box in the instance properties: </div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjtdkzMy1I4fO-awoUzPL7SvdYh-3fu1pOjX7Ezom9-npWDvDc3ausVGsl0htk__6MZc5a9j72hDtkLgyN9rzgSvmDz6RyC_Co8rv0sZvnWN9lWq6T_EgXocsYB4BsE3IdOf7XWLY5bNB8/s1600/make+reference+line.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="236" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjtdkzMy1I4fO-awoUzPL7SvdYh-3fu1pOjX7Ezom9-npWDvDc3ausVGsl0htk__6MZc5a9j72hDtkLgyN9rzgSvmDz6RyC_Co8rv0sZvnWN9lWq6T_EgXocsYB4BsE3IdOf7XWLY5bNB8/s400/make+reference+line.JPG" width="400" /></a></div>
After that select the point and click Make Adaptive button on Modify tab.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi9_wYwVc_rXHoXZLAwI-qei-wr3QfUHtOPVYkMPdeArFM3qayo5tIAAkpAgV7Cd9_3yKYvsIyEjEjXy9n5AXmJq1GasGhGQrMHPF02B7v-lP9CoHkgptYuBfTGVkK1ShwhrWjiDVP9laU/s1600/make+adaptive.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi9_wYwVc_rXHoXZLAwI-qei-wr3QfUHtOPVYkMPdeArFM3qayo5tIAAkpAgV7Cd9_3yKYvsIyEjEjXy9n5AXmJq1GasGhGQrMHPF02B7v-lP9CoHkgptYuBfTGVkK1ShwhrWjiDVP9laU/s320/make+adaptive.JPG" width="292" /></a></div>
<br />
Next you need to create a rig which will host the profiles for encasement as well as profiles for voids which will make holes for ducts. For this you need to place/host a point on your ref line. Anywhere along the length of the line. However you can also use one of the adaptive points to host the rig ref lines and points.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi7Qto5YqqJhJ5hRvjboLAr-AY9zpSZ0pKkJQKAhLur6ssTelwD6lcYtqQaSvPwJ8FSMlTYI1LFIwoCBaWE7DBKM8zIwfhTvQgJkdxi30_q4RQsI5OtjgQGClT-vzwqIIUhFfUN64b4cgg/s1600/rig+on+point+plane.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi7Qto5YqqJhJ5hRvjboLAr-AY9zpSZ0pKkJQKAhLur6ssTelwD6lcYtqQaSvPwJ8FSMlTYI1LFIwoCBaWE7DBKM8zIwfhTvQgJkdxi30_q4RQsI5OtjgQGClT-vzwqIIUhFfUN64b4cgg/s320/rig+on+point+plane.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
The important thing to notice here is that all the lines are reference lines and all the points are hosted on ref lines. Only the circles for voids which are not gonna host anything are left as model lines. For the sake of parametric controls you can dimension this rig and put control parameters like the offset from each other, offset from edges, duct dia etc. I used the following parameters:<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjk8ufn0icovPpVxf4wI_xz1BbM8ICs0lu4W2fAqwrKQcbrPog4wWld0MLQHwDZjhdfEyPdZIXerXsCxpgeIShJ9Y7qm2gSsZJwYG24TmzSidHhInrII6OFGBOBT3re7-mm8Wi9FZ2SP5I/s1600/front.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="417" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjk8ufn0icovPpVxf4wI_xz1BbM8ICs0lu4W2fAqwrKQcbrPog4wWld0MLQHwDZjhdfEyPdZIXerXsCxpgeIShJ9Y7qm2gSsZJwYG24TmzSidHhInrII6OFGBOBT3re7-mm8Wi9FZ2SP5I/s640/front.JPG" width="640" /></a></div>
As you may have noticed in the illustrations I have made my rig aligned to the center of one of the side ducts. This is because in Revit MEP when you place a pipe or conduit and you use parallel pipes or ducts tool, usually you draw the parallel pipes from one side to another and it's always easy to snap to one side element rather than center. Moreover, not all the ducts banks have a duct running right on the center, for example in our case it is 4 ducts, however if it there were 5 ducts we could use the center one as an insertion/alignment. Whatever, as a result by making my encasement family alined to the top right or top left duct center will enable me to draw this element from the plan view by just tabbing and snapping to the desired pipe center. <br />
<br />
Now, one we have our two (adaptive)point spline with a rig on one of the point which hosts profiles for future sweeps we can start creating forms. Firs we need to create a rectangular sweep with the main encasement shape. Choose the rectangular chain of ref.lines and the main path and click Create Solid Form.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEghL6qcxjY3MM_9PyREi-EACQOsfWRVpqKUhTpOezQDwCLUAJvGBdXGPIme73nzPsL5h5HTWOJ1ba-0O2IhgSrQLZ9mSxbro8XStaUGJr_NI0zgdMHWYBr90wPRkfQLSmPQOclhEVTE_MU/s1600/create+rectangle.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="269" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEghL6qcxjY3MM_9PyREi-EACQOsfWRVpqKUhTpOezQDwCLUAJvGBdXGPIme73nzPsL5h5HTWOJ1ba-0O2IhgSrQLZ9mSxbro8XStaUGJr_NI0zgdMHWYBr90wPRkfQLSmPQOclhEVTE_MU/s320/create+rectangle.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
Then select the circles one by one and click the small arrow next to Create Form tool to expand it and select Void Form. It will create voids sweep for each one of the ducts in the rectangular encasement shape. Note, you will most probably need to set the visual style to wireframe to see the main path and be able to select it after the rectangular shape is created. <br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgOIG35xLVFi7C7OIZ1Ojiz-_oCbWxKhVhOAlr_9IA4JBmWLVXqpxFZxGbhMVH0VOLnx3AQ6rwqWwbUZ7IZwMN7PSVd4qANmdjB5rPQadPenLG0LOQLWVMGbuaj3T4JITeKSjHtG4E5j6Y/s1600/encasement+family.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="178" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgOIG35xLVFi7C7OIZ1Ojiz-_oCbWxKhVhOAlr_9IA4JBmWLVXqpxFZxGbhMVH0VOLnx3AQ6rwqWwbUZ7IZwMN7PSVd4qANmdjB5rPQadPenLG0LOQLWVMGbuaj3T4JITeKSjHtG4E5j6Y/s320/encasement+family.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
That's it. Now you can load it into your project where you have ducts/pipes/conduits running and tab select and click two end points of a duct (duct bank) that needs to have an encasement.<br />
<br />
This is my first post with a certain topic so I understand that there might be some parts that will need clarification. I will try to be more accurate in explanations on future topics.</div>

<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Hello world, and here is my first blog about BIM and my fist blog post in general. Well, I thought is unfair to work in a BIM consulting firm and not to share all the challenges and experience with like minded people. </span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Well let's go then. So what is BIM actually? In so many beautiful and confusing ideas about perfect BIM workflows and platforms I wanna tell my own story and <span style="color: #7f6000;"><b>b</b></span>uild my <span style="color: #7f6000;"><b>i</b></span>nformation <span style="color: #7f6000;"><b>m</b></span>odel. </span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">I would like to wonder with you in today's technological possibilities and human factor of a BIM</span> <span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">workflow. But first of all let me brief about my background. </span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Well, I started drawing when I was 3 years old. Actually, and the first two things I remember drawing with a blue pen was a rectangular shaped house front with a window, a door and a pitched roof. If I'll find one of those I'll update this post </span><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">one of these days</span>. The second one, of course was a distorted vehicle. Then I started my painting classes during my early school years. After, when I was a teenager I started taking photographs with SLR cameras. It still remains a professional hobby for me. Then I decided that I wanna be a film director and failed my acting exams and two years military service started. It was then in the army when I realized that I have a passion to virtual graphics and after my military discharge when I had my first job as a database operator I started self learning 3d studio Max. I was so passionate about it that I immediately started looking for jobs in 3d modeling sphere. When I approached a very famous 3d artist one day and showcased him my "poor and funny" portfolio he just told me that I have to learn some CAD software and start working as a draftsman or modeler for AEC industry. That was in 2004. Six months later I was modeling my first real house project in 3ds max and by chance saw a software name called Revit which was mentioned in the help files of 3ds max as an architectural modeling software. I clearly remember my struggling when I was trying to model that single story residential unit with 3ds Max. You don't know how happy I was when I saw that little illustration showing a Revit wall with an active dimension that you can edit - and the rest as they say is a history. Back then (2004-2005) Autodesk Revit Building was just a perfect modeling tool for me and when I started working in that platform I couldn't ever imagine that it will deliver the BIM stuff and become a trend in the AEC industry.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Ever since I implemented Revit workflow in various fields including plant design industry, telecom infrastructure design industry, architectural industry and structural precast industry, precast panel industry. Now I can finally tell that I do BIM and I can write about my BIM experience and challenges me and my colleagues faced.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Welcome to BIMspot @ blogspot :)</span><br />
